Hublot goes gothic with Big Bang Depeche mode Hublot’s latest collaboration with Depeche Mode depicts a skull hourglass on the dial.

Raising funds for charity, including a limited edition 10" vinyl single of "Waving Tongue" Given that I've written about the best gothic watches and am happy to wear a Victorian cameo down my throat, it's fair to say that I'm Time+Tide's resident gothic watch. Well, this list may need an update now, because Hublot just released what may be the most gothic watch ever. Depeche Mode are one of the most quintessentially dark and moody bands out there, and even as their style ventures towards bright and pop, their 2023 album Memento Mori saw them slip into the morbid once again. Dressed in black, the Hublot Big Bang Depeche Mode Spirit follows them in despair.
Hublot and Depeche Mode have collaborated on several Big Bang watches before, but these timepieces capture more of the British band’s rebellious and industrial message. This "Big Bang Spirit" truly embodies what "Memento Mori" is about, the art of remembering death. The dial explores multiple shades of black on its deep, polished background and is embossed with a skull within the hourglass, reminding us that our time will one day run out. There's even black sand made from tiny ceramic balls that float around the skull, adding to the dial's dynamic feel. While black on black is not the most legible combination, the way the light hits the hands does make them clear enough to read the time.
The tonneau-shaped case is usually found only in luxury watches, but Hublot reserves this case exclusively for the most exploratory watches. The soul of Big Bang Depeche Mode has an aggressive tack border that echoes the belts and other accessories seen on regular goth clubgoers. They are also used as hour markers, and their sharp pyramidal shape helps them catch the light and give off a subtle, if not dull, shine. The case itself is made of black ceramic, ensuring that any coating will not wear off and will remain black forever. This model has a diameter of 42 mm and a lug-to-lug distance of 52 mm. Comes with a black rubber strap that echoes the hobnail pattern and a recycled fabric strap.
Many Spirit of Big Bang watches feature high-end complications, but aside from the moving sand on the dial, the Depeche Mode version only has a time function. The HUB1710 that powers it is based on the Zenith Elite 670 movement, which runs at 4 Hz and has a power reserve of up to 50 hours. You can see the movement through the sapphire display caseback, and all parts are coated in a dark color to accentuate the moodiness. The sapphire glass also features the Depeche Mode logo, alongside the Conservation Collective logo, which is part of the watch’s commitment to raising funds for major charities. If you're a Depeche Mode fan, you'll also be happy to hear that the watch comes with Wagging Tongue, a 10-inch vinyl single from Memento Mori.
